Apu,as he is popularly known to all, has been engaged as a Graphic Designer & a free-lance journalist since 1996, and his stint with this field opened an opportunity for him to develop his skill in photography, and his camera became his all time companion.
Even at a young age, he was already moving against the flow, preferring to be self taught with the aid of tutors – unfettered by the constraints of the education system.

Apu is best known for his architectural,wild life & landscape series.He has participated in various shows since 1991, and has several prestigious awards for his photography to his credit.

Potchitro or story telling through depicting images on canvas has always been a traditional form of art and entertainment.
The trail goes a long way back to the Middle Ages when story telling was an important form of entertainment in Bengal. Poets told tales of gods, saints and the virtuous, of kings and queens, through their writings. Artists portrayed these verses through natural colours and motifs. The concept of comics as believed came from this form of art.The age-old folk art survived centuries to tell the tale. It still continues to entertain the art collectors.

Snapshots of humanity

HUMANITY intrigues Ananda Chowdhury. He expresses humanity in every subject he photographs living or non-living, human or beast. Photography is his catharsis of life. Hence it is natural that there are a good number of real-life stories behind his fascination for human interest in photographs.

“I have travelled extensively. Every place I go has a story to tell. I somehow cannot escape the human element,” he says. He calls his series of photographs ‘Genesis, existence, termination- the portraits of humanity’. There is a story behind this as well. “When I had gone to Joydeep Mela in Keduli, a small village in Bengal, I showed my photographs to this foreigner, after which he suggested that I exhibit them.He was the one who gave the name ‘Portraits of humanity’. His photograph is a part of this exhibition."

At another instance, when he passed a famine-ridden village in Uttar Pradesh, he was deeply touched by the number of deaths that had occurred and continued.” Everyone was in dismay. People had not eaten for days together. They were crying, starving and had lost hope. At that point there was this little girl who kept crying the whole day. I just sat with her for sometime and tried to make her feel better. It was later that evening that she smiled for the first time. And that was my Kodak moment. I clicked the picture immediately. That little gesture, me, was a sign of hope. I try to give hope through the pictures I take.”

Some other photographs close to his heart include that of his mother, the last one he took before she died and another one of his family. These pictures are not for sale. A number of his photographs have kids. “I love kids. They get along real well with me and understand Me.”said Ananda Chowdhury. He juggles between Kolkata and Delhi and does not classify himself as anything in particular.” When people ask me what I do in life, I say, `nothing in particular’. I travel a lot, I do web-designing for a construction and interior company in Delhi and I am a photographer. This is probably because I don’t work for money. It means nothing to me. I just need people to live life. And that is what I tell the others too. Money comes and goes, people stay. May be that is another reason why I express humanity so much," he smiles.

`Genesis, existence, termination- portraits of humanity will be on display and sale at the Hues Art Gallery, 72/139,1st floor, Eldams Road, Teynampet till March 13.
